Energy: London sets energy saving drive
Thursday, December 3rd 2009Thousands of London homes are taking part in an energy-cutting trial, launched as part of London mayor Boris Johnson’s pledge to cut carbon emissions by 60 percent by 2025. Ten thousand households across nine London boroughs will be given a ‘green’ makeover. Selected residents will be offered services ranging from switching to energy-efficient light bulbs, to and loft and cavity wall insulation. The costs of the changes will be subsidized for most and free to those on benefits. The programme aims to extend to cover 1.2 million domestic properties by 2015.
The mayor’s office estimates that the measures could cut London’s carbon emissions by up to 1.2 million tonnes annually by 2015. It is hoped that the programme will boost London’s potential to attract funding from the government through the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) scheme, which came into effect in April 2008, obliging electricity and gas suppliers in the UK to help reduce carbon emissions from homes.
